Opening Your Own Practice

Presenters: Kari Overson, PI, CFE and Kenneth Hines, CFE, CAMS, EA

Session Synopsis

This session will introduce the participants to considerations for opening their own practices as private investigators, Certified Fraud Examiners and consultants. Presented by two retired federal agents who opened their own practices. Topics addressed will include formation of your business, licensing, rates, start-up costs, insurance/bonding, retainers, hiring subcontractors and/or employees, marketing, and of course, networking! There will be some room for Q&A so participants can ask more specific questions relating to their own interests.

 

Presenter Bios

Kari Overson, PI, CFE
Kari Overson retired in 2018 as the Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Office of Inspector General, Western Regional Office in Seattle, WA. Kari opened her own business as a Private Investigator and Certified Fraud Examiner, focusing on various types of frauds, including loan fraud, bank fraud, bankruptcy fraud, financial exploitation of the elderly, False Claims Act cases, and Government Contracting fraud. Her work also involves tracing assets in estate cases, divorces and other litigation.

Kenneth Hines, CFE, CAMS, EA
Ken Hines retired from Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation and opened his own firm with other retired IRS-CI agents. He is an Enrolled Agent, CFE, and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist. He is also a lecturer and Executive-in-Residence for the University of Washington-Bothell School of Business. Ken is a sought-after expert in in international tax law and regulations. His firm offers a wide range of services and skills including forensic accounting, tax and compliance expertise.
